I am realizing that going to school in the 70s and 80s that I was taught by the presentation method and learned about things. I have realized that learning by the participation method for our children of today is much more powerful and that they are learning to be through daily experience. My mind is reeling thinking about all the doors that this opens for my 1st grade students growing up in the conceptual age.
Angela, I, too, was taught through the lecture model that was the norm at the time. I was lucky enough in college that during my teacher ed classes my professors took a hands-on approach and insisted that we think through what we had learned as we actually did lessons. It was a revelation, and I knew I wanted to teach that way. Now with all the technology available to our students, I am facing new revelations that are challenging the way I teach. Challenges put me out of my comfort zone, but in the long run are where the most learning takes place.
